The iconic Hummer nameplate returns on the market in style. Unlike the previous versions marketed under GM’s sub-brand Hummer, the all-new Hummer arrives as the all-new, zero-emission, all-electric, full-size pickup truck with the GMC badge. The new model is GMC’s first all-electric model with impressive performance and off-road capability. The truck will go on sale as the 2022 GMC Hummer EV and will be available in the single trim. The Edition 1 trim is the range-topping configuration with a six-figure price and tons of impressive features. Three cheaper versions will follow for the next three successive model years.
The all-new Hummer EV Edition 1 will get attention with a mix of strong, modern, and sleek appearances. The model will employ a 1000-hp tri-motor powertrain backed by four-wheel steering, adaptive suspension, crab-walk capability, 300+ miles of range, etc. The new Hummer will also use 800-Volt DC fast-charging architecture. The equipment list will include modern EV technologies as well as the newest infotainment and safety systems. The cabin will also look modern and come loaded with convenience features.
The all-new, full-electric GMC Hummer EV will be an alternative to the Tesla Cybertruck, Rivian R1T, and Ford F-150 EV. Following the arrival of the Hummer EV pickup truck will be an introduction of the SUV version.
2022 GMC Hummer EV: Design
The all-new 2022 GMC Hummer EV is designed around GM’s BT1 platform reserved for the full-size, battery-electric pickup trucks and SUVs. The platform shares DNA with the T1 body-on-frame architecture used for GM’s large SUVs and trucks. The platform is made from lightweight materials and allows various powertrain battery-electric applications.
From the visual perspective, the new Hummer EV gets attention with its strong presence and modern and sleek design. The truck has heavily sculpted fender flares that accommodate massive 35-inch Goodyear Wrangler Territory mud tires. The model will also be available with even larger 37-inch tires. There will also be underbody armor steel plates protecting the model’s battery and other elements.
The front section of the model is defined by the slim grille with signature Hummer stamping and seven vertical slats. Modern headlights with the H-shaped elements flanking the grille. Bellow the grille is an off-road-style front bumper.
The rear section of the model includes the five-foot cargo bed with the GMC’s MultiPro tailgate with the Hummer signature stamping.
The new Hummer EV measures 216.8 inches in length while riding on the 135.6-inch wheelbase. As a reference, the GMC Sierra 1500 Crew Cab Short box is 231.6 inches long with a 147.4-inch wheelbase. While the mentioned GMC Sierra is 81.2 inches wide, the all-electric GMC Hummer measures 86.7 inches in width.
Interior, Equipment:
The cabin of the all-new Hummer EV takes the form of the CrewCab pickup truck with a space volume similar to the GMC Sierra CrewCab.
The truck has a simple, horizontal dash with rectangular elements. The model debuted with the black and white upholstery combination with bronze highlights. The Hummer EV pickup has also a removable top.
At the equipment level, the model goes on sale with a standard 13.4-inch infotainment touchscreen and a 12.3-inch digital instrument panel. The truck will also equip various connectivity features by default including Android Auto and Apple Car Play, a Wi-Fi hotspot, and OnStar telematics. Standard equipment will also be the brand’s Super Cruise self-driving system. Other standard safety equipment should be automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, lane departure warning, lane-keeping assist, adaptive cruise control, etc. The model should also employ up to 18 cameras to provide all-around situational awareness including underbody view.
2022 GMC Hummer EV: Powertrain
The all-new 2022 GMC Hummer EV will get power from the tri-motor setup fed by a large battery. The system can produce a staggering 1000 hp. The all-wheel drive will be standard and GMC promises impressive performance with a 0-to-60 time of 3 seconds. One of three motors will spin the front wheels while two other units will be responsible for the rear. Electric motors will get power from the 200-kWh battery that should provide up to 350 miles of zero-emission range.
Recharging the battery will be possible by the 800-Volt 350-kW fast-charging architecture. The fast-charging system should provide up to 100 miles of range in just 10 minutes.
Aside from the 1000-hp tri-motor powertrain, the Hummer EV will also employ four-wheel-steering with crab-walk capability, adaptive air suspension, and various off-road modes and apps.
The truck sports also impressive approach and departure angles and standard 10.1 inches of ground clearance. When equipped with an optional mode setting, the model gains up to 6 inches of additional ground clearance.
2022 GMC Hummer EV: Release, Price
The 2022 GMC Hummer EV will go on sale in fall 2021. For the 2022 model year, the range-topping Edition 1 version will be the sole option with a price tag of $112, 995. Cheaper versions will appear for the next three successive model years. The cheapest $79, 995 EV2 version with the two-motor setup will appear in spring 2024.
