The mid-size GMC Canyon gets high scores for its comfortable and luxurious nature but the high-torque 2.8-liter Duramax Diesel engine may also be its buying-decision value. Buyers who don’t hesitate to spend more for the oil burner get in turn 30 mpg highway fuel economy and up to 7, 700 pounds of towing capability. Compared to the twin Chevy Colorado model available also with the Duramax Diesel engine, the Canyon is also a more stylish option and high-dollar Denali trim is also its strong side.
The newest generation Canyon arrived for the 2015 model year while the turbodiesel unit reached the market a year later. For the 2020 model year, the model comes with just a few new features. The 2020 GMC Canyon Diesel gets a new remote-locking tailgate and standard tire-fill alert. GM also revised the availability of the safety equipment and updated 8-inch touchscreen-based infotainment system with navigation will be marketed in the upper trims.
No mechanical or notable styling updates for the GM’s mid-size twins for the new model year as some reports predicted. The turbocharged engine isn’t also the part of the equipment list for the 2020 version as well as AT4 version. However, the Canyon AT4 version will appear in 2020 for the 2021 model year with possible styling and mechanical upgrades of the model’s range.
2020 GMC Canyon Diesel: Powertrain, Capability
The 2020 GMC Canyon Diesel returns on the roads and worksites with no mechanical upgrades. The same case is with the 2.5-liter petrol-powered versions and V-6-equipped models. Unfortunately, either the AT4 version will be available of the 2020 model year but it should make to the lineup for the 2021 version.
A Thai-built 2.8-liter Duramax turbo-diesel four-cylinder engine will continue in with the same performance in the new model year. The engine powers the mid-size Canyon with 181 hp at 3, 400 rpm and 369 pound-feet of torque at 2, 000 rpm. The oil burner is again in the mix with the six-speed automatic transmission. There will be both two- and four-wheel drive options combined with the Duramax Diesel engine.
With no mechanical upgrades, old EPA ratings remain for the Duramax-powered Canyon. With the two-wheel drive, the driver should expect 20 mpg city and 30 mpg highways or 25 mpg combined. With the power added on four wheels, the fuel economy will shift to 19 mpg city and 28 mpg highways.
The model with the turbodiesel engine under the hood will allow up to 7, 700 pounds of towing capacity. For the ride on more rugged trails, the All Terrain package will be available adding the off-road-tuned suspension, rear differential lock, skid plates, all-terrain tires, and hill descent control.
2020 GMC Canyon Diesel: Design
The 2020 GMC Canyon Diesel and other versions won’t get similar styling upgrades as the recently all-new Sierra as some reports predicted. The model returns with the same boxy body, squared-off fender flares and rectangular elements.
Different cab styles and cargo bed options will be combined with the unique styling elements depending on the chosen trim. The model uses radiator-style grille in some trims or Denali signature chrome grille. There will be black-finish grille or chromed versions in SLE, All Terrain or SLT models. The bumpers will also get trim-specific body-color or chrome treatment. There will also be a range of wheel styles and sized starting from 17-inch units and up to 20 inches. The All Terrain-equipped version will also look unique thanks to the off-road enactments such as the all-terrain tires, skid plates, dark-theme exterior, etc.
Interior, equipment:
The cabin of the next Canyon will also stay in the same form. The Duramax-equipped Canyon will be available from SLE trim and above. So all models will come with updated 8-inch touchscreen-based infotainment system. The SLE trim will also include a leather-wrapped steering wheel, heated front seats, available navigation, etc.
The SLT version will switch to the leather upholstery, wireless charging, etc. The top-tier Denali will raise the stake with ventilated front seats, Bose sound system, unique perforated leather upholstery and trim accents.
Some of the active safety systems will also be available in Driver Alert package including lane departure warning and forward emergency braking.
2020 GMC Canyon Diesel: Release, Price
The 2020 GMC Canyon Diesel alongside other versions will go on sale this fall. Buyers will need to pay around $38, 000 for the entry-level Duramax-powered Canyon. The base Canyon starts at $22, 200.
