Pickup trucks have never been so popular. Especially in the United States, they are used both as a workhorse and as a statement. Some people use them for work while some enjoy the high ride they can have while riding in one of the half-ton pickups. A lot of manufacturers have made cars that are hybrid or fully electric. This is done to save the environment, and simply because this is seen as the future of transportation. On the other hand, not too many trucks are hybrid or fully electric.
This might be due to the fact that they are used differently. You would need a lot of batteries to haul and tow heavy cargo. Stopping to charge your pickup often isn’t too fun either. But as technology advances, we are able to fully charge our trucks in an hour and get great mileage on a single charge.
Here we made a list of the top 10 Hybrid Pickup Trucks for 2022,2023 and 2024 that are available in the United States. This list might help you decide which truck is a good fit for your desires and needs.
1. 2022 Ford Maverick
The name Maverick was previously used on a not that good car in the ‘70s. But Ford has reused the name to make one of the most popular trucks recently. The 2022 Ford Maverick is a bit on the smaller size, just below the mid-size Ranger. It does share some design ideas with the ranger, especially with parts and mechanical features.
Ford Maverick rides on the chassis that is used on the Bronco Sport compact crossover and comes with several powertrain options including a hybrid one as a standard. The Maverick will be competing in the category of smaller pickups along with Santa Cruz. The price for the 2022 Ford Maverick ranges on the trim and they go from $ 21.000 up to $ 27.000 depending on the amenities you want. We only get a Crew Cab, which means four doors and a roomy interior. It can seat five people comfortably.
We have chrome accents on the inside with some knobs and buttons, so it is not all on a touch screen. But we have a central infotainment system, we don’t expect anything too large, perhaps 8 inches in size. Upholstery can be leather, suede, and fabric. The cargo bed is only 4.5 feet but it is a small pickup after all. It has outlets for power when you are tailgating. We also get some driver assistance software but only on the higher trims, so you will have to spring out for those.
Maverick comes with a hybrid powertrain as a default. It is a 2.5-liter four-cylinder with an electric motor that boasts 191 horsepower. It has a front-wheel drive and automatic transmission.
You can choose a non-hybrid option. This is a 250 hp 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine paired with 8-speed automatic transmission. All-wheel drive is possible on the non-hybrid. It is not too nimble, it needs 5.9 seconds to hit 60 mph. It can haul 1.500 pounds and tow 2000 pounds. If you choose the turbocharged version it can up the towing up to 4000.
2. 2022 Ford F-150 Hybrid
The all-new F-150 line is looking to build upon the popularity of its predecessors. But this time around you can add a PowerBoost hybrid powertrain into any of the F-150 trim levels, except the Raptor. This will cost you a measly $4,495, but it will save you a lot of money on fuel in the future.
Hybrid powertrains are all the rage nowadays and it is no wonder that Ford is making moves to incorporate this technology into their flagship trucks. On the interior, we have a few design changes. We get upholstery in the form of leather, suede, and fabric. Heated and ventilated seats are a must in this time and age. This will ensure comfort even on the longer rides.
We get a central infotainment system, 8-inches in size. Chrome accents all around the cabin which is expected to add some luxury to the interior. The truck can seat five people comfortably with plenty of headroom and legroom. With the engine, we have several options, which is nice.
The first choice is a 3.3 liter V6 which produces 290 horsepower. There is a 5.0 liter V8 with 400 horsepower. Twin-turbocharged 2.7 liter V6 with 325 horsepower. All of these come with ten-speed automatic transmission.
But what we are excited about is the hybrid powertrain option being available for the first time. This is a 3.5-liter twin-turbo V6 and a 35 kW electric motor coupled with a 10-speed automatic transmission. The range on this one is up to 700 miles per tank while also being able to power an onboard generator. This can come in handy on work sites or during power outages.
Rear or all-wheel drive is optional with any F-150 powertrain option. From zero to sixty it needs 5.4 seconds. Towing capacity is 12.700 pounds and 3.250 maximum pounds for hauling cargo. On the highway, we can expect 26 mpg and 20 mpg in the city. The hybrid version can achieve 26 mpg in both environments.
3. 2023 Toyota Tundra i-FORCE MAX Hybrid
Toyota is no stranger to hybrid vehicles, Prius being the most famous for sure. They have been doing it for the last 20 years and now they are in the hybrid pickup game. The all-new 2023 Toyota Tundra I-Force MAX Hybrid is about to hit the road and off-road. Most Toyota’s hybrids used parallel systems, gasoline engines along with two electric motor-generators that are connected to the transmission.
However, the new i-Force Max is using a solitary powertrain in the upcoming Sequoia. But in the Tundra the electric motor will be sandwiched between a 3.4-liter twin-turbo V6 engine and will be using a 10-speed automatic transmission. This type of engine composition can produce 437 horsepower and 583 pound-feet of torque. More than enough for the gargantuan Tundra.
In terms of fuel economy, you can expect 20mpg in the city, 24 on the highway, and 22mpg in the combined environments. There is an option between two-wheel and four-wheel drive. The i-Force Max is just a bit shy of the numbers boosted by the F-150 hybrid. Max towing capacity is 11.450 pounds. But unfortunately, this type of engine composition doesn’t do much in the off-roading environment.
Most of the time it uses a gasoline-powered engine. There are two variants for the cargo bed. The long-wheelbase is 6.5 feet, while the short-wheelbase variant is 5.5 feet. The hybrid technology can be put into the car for a small amount of $ 3.400. This should pay off in the long run and save the planet along the way. The Tundra has an adjustable air suspension, an air spring, and a heads-up display.
These are all nice amenities that improve the quality of life in a truck. On the inside, we get a huge touchscreen from where you can control everything. There are chrome and wood accents all along with the cabin which increases the already great luxury of the Tundra. The base price for a truck like this is starting at $ 53.000, and it could increase depending on the amenities you opt for.
4. 2022 Ram 1500 Hybrid
RAM is always competing for the crown of the best pickup truck. In most categories, they are neck and neck with Ford or GMC. They look to assert dominance with the all-new 2022 RAM 1500 Hybrid. But recently they got a tall order. Ford introduced a hybrid F-150 and announced an all-electric version. This puts Ram in a tough spot.
But they are looking to come up on top with a hybrid version of one of their most popular flagships. The Ram 1500 got a small redesign recently, so its look is not stale or outdated at all. The front fascia was reinvented, it is bigger and the headlights are slimmer while using the best-LED technology has to offer. No big changes in the read and the profile look of the truck.
However, the TRX version, which is an off-roading option, comes with wider dimensions and more horsepower. Technology has advanced so we can expect some changes inside the cabin. There will be several cab options. But nevertheless, the truck will be able to seat five people comfortably. It looks a bit luxurious on the inside with all the leather and suede upholstery. Also, there are accents of chrome which adds style for sure. As far as powertrain options, there are quite a few.
Not much will change in terms of engine options. We get a gasoline and diesel option and the much sought-after hybrid version. There won’t be an all-electric version of the Ram 1500 yet, but keep an eye out for that one. We get a 3.6-liter gasoline engine that can dish out 305 horsepower and 270 pound-feet of torque.
There is a 5.7 liter Hemi engine that uses gasoline to make 395 horsepower and 310 pound-feet of torque. The diesel variant is the well-known Ecodiesel engine that dishes out 260 horsepower and 480 pound-feet of torque. With this type of power, you can expect to tow around 13.000 pounds. The hybrid option is a 3.6-liter V6 engine combined with an e-Torque system. This can make up to 305 horsepower and 270 pound-feet of torque.
5. 2023 Honda Ridgeline Hybrid
The all-new 2023 Honda Ridgeline Hybrid will compete in the category of mid-size trucks. Ridgeline has always been a dependable truck and didn’t come with a lot of issues. Honda isn’t too well known for making trucks, but Ridgeline is about to change that. This truck did recently receive a facelift but no need to stop improvements now. Most of the changes are minor and won’t change the design too drastically.
But we are most excited about the hybrid powertrain that is available as of this generation. On the inside, it is very similar to its sibling, Pilot SUV. That means a comfortable roomy cabin that is able to seat five people without any problems. It does have an upper-class feel to it. It doesn’t feel like a truck that is supposed to work, mostly because it is basically an SUV on the inside. There is a choice of fabric, suede, and leather.
We get an 8-inch infotainment system with standard connectivity. On the outside, we see only small movements. The grille is an enormous one, this was partly due to looks and partly for better air circulation. It enables drivers to push their trucks to the limits while working. There are a lot of chrome accents on the outside, namely the grille and wheels. This shaves off some weight which further increases power to weight ratio, which is always good in a truck. Under the hood, we saw the real change.
Fuel efficiency was improved according to the manufacturer and some other quality of life changes. We now get all-wheel drive as standard. The basic engine is a 3.5-liter V6, it can produce 280 horsepower and 265 pound-feet of torque. There is a 9-speed automatic transmission. On the highway, the Ridgeline spends 24 mpg and 18 in the city. While nothing is official in terms of the hybrid powertrain, we suspect it will be a combination of the basic engine already offered along with a hybrid system that some other trucks use
6. 2023 Hyundai Santa Cruz Hybrid
Hyundai is giving their Santa Cruz line of trucks a much-needed refreshment. The 2023 Hyundai Santa Cruz Hybrid is part truck and part SUV. The new Santa Cruz will have a bigger choice of colors and a lot of amenities that weren’t available with the previous version. It was upgraded with the new suspension and dampers which in turn lower the ride and decrease ground clearance.
This could improve the stability and driveability of the truck. On the inside, there are also some stylistic changes. We get a 10.2-inch screen, this unit will be able to control everything connected to the battery. It comes with Apple and Android connectivity and Bluetooth as well. We get suede and upholstery with contrast stitching to add some class. We can see chrome accents all along with the cabin which improves the luxury feel of the truck.
It is quite roomy and spacious, enough for five people definitely. We also get a brand-made stereo with 8 speakers, heated and ventilated seats, a push-button start, and a panoramic sunroof. Under the hood, things are a bit stale, to be honest. The 2023 Hyundai Santa Cruz Hybrid is using the well-proven 2.5-liter turbo-four engine. This gas-powered engine puts out 281 horsepower and 311-pound feet of torque.
Although we would have hoped for more in a truck this is more than enough. It has a dual-clutch transmission and all-wheel drive. It gets 18 mpg in the city and 26 mpg in the open. The hybrid version was much talked about and we had official statements on this. Hyundai has a plan in the works to implement electric powertrains in their vehicles. But we might have to wait until 2023. Manufacturers claimed that the speed of electrification depends on the demand for hybrid vehicles. But we reckon that the demand is quite high.
7. 2023 Toyota Tacoma Hybrid
Toyota Tacoma is already the best-selling mid-size truck in the US. But Toyota is trying to stay ahead and hold on to lead in the race. We are getting a brand new 2023 Toyota Tacoma Hybrid. This truck should be equipped with the latest amenities and the best technology.
But what we are curious about is the hybrid powertrain it supposedly comes with. It should be an improvement upon the old powertrain with better fuel economy and performance overall. On the outside, we got some big moves and changes. The old platform was scrapped and discarded. Tacoma now resides on a brand new TNGA-G platform. This is also used in Tundra, Sequoia, and the Lexus LX. This should improve the stability and driveability of the car.
All of those vehicles are bigger when compared to Tacoma but mostly just the dimensions will differ, nothing mechanically. There will be no more leaf springs and we can expect a mechanical solution that improves performance. Some of the styling changes will probably come from the Tundra. On the inside, we get leather and suede. Chrome accents here and there to add some luxury to the dashing interior.
We get a central infotainment system to control all the goodies inside. The cabin is roomy and spacious enough for five people. There are buttons and knobs so it is not completely digital or minimalistic. As far as the powertrain is concerned we didn’t get an official statement. But we can imagine that Toyota will use a proven system from the Highlander. It is a 2.5-liter inline-four powertrain. We might get a Tundra-based powertrain. But the Tacoma hybrid system would be centered around a smaller V6 engine.
A brand new 2.4-liter turbo-four might do the trick. With this little beast, we get around 350 horsepower. But before we get official testing underway there is no way to be sure.
8. 2024 Jeep Gladiator 4xe Plug-In Hybrid
Jeep also dabbled in Hybrid technology and we should see the results in the 2024 Jeep Gladiator 4xe Plug-In Hybrid. This truck, or ute if you will, might debut a bit later than we wished for. The project got pushed back to 2024 due to pandemic reasons. The exact changes are not official but we are positive that the powertrain will be the most important one.
The plan for Jeep is to put electric powertrains in all of its models by the year 2025. We already got the Wrangler 4xe and Grand Cherokee 4xe. So we know the performance is there. But only Jeep knows the reasons the Gladiator electrification got pushed back. While the powertrain is the biggest question, Gladiator could also use some refreshment in the styling category. Perhaps on the inside, Jeep could make the car more luxurious. After all, every other manufacturer is slowly stepping away from rugged truck interiors and more toward stylish SUV cabins.
Better technology is a must, no point in going electric under the hood if all of the controls are controlled with knobs instead of a touchscreen. We did get some info from Stellantis on the powertrain in question. It will be the same hybrid technology used in the Wrangler 4xe. It is a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine that uses petrol. This is coupled with two electric motors and a battery pack of 17kWh. All of this will reside under the second-row seat. The output of this system should be around 375 horsepower and have 470 pound-feet of torque. If we used only the electric part of the system we could get around 40km.
9. 2024 Nissan Titan Hybrid
Competing in the full-size pickup category we got a Nissan Titan. This truck should get a redesign in 2024, and apparently, we are getting a hybrid powertrain along with it. Nissan is not most known for building big trucks so this should be their chance to prove us wrong. Titan’s sales dropped, and Ford is selling their F-150 50 times more than Nissan. Next-generation Titan could be the opportunity to turn the tides. It has a blocky look and a much-outdated design.
Times are changing and it is time for Nissan to follow suit. Most of today’s trucks have more angles, they are curvier and more aerodynamic. Making the truck more aerodynamic can go a long way, especially when using electric powertrains. It decreases wind resistance and allows the truck to go further on a single charge. And with electric motors, charge time and range are probably the two most important aspects.
Nobody likes stopping to charge their truck every 100 miles. We get LED taillights and on the front, we get interlocking headlights also LED. The grille is humongous and made out of chrome. This will save weight with the material but the bigger grille also means better air circulation. This allows them to use the truck more and push it to its limits. On the inside we get a 12.3 touchscreen, this will control everything that is connected to a battery. We get nice quality suede and leather.
Along with some chrome finishes adding luxury. And the interior does look mighty luxurious. Current Titan comes with a 5.6-liter V8 engine. This engine makes 400 horsepower. The hybrid variant is believed to be based on the 3.0-liter twin-turbo V6. This engine is also found in Infiniti Q60 models. This should allow for mild hybrid and plug-in hybrid variants. The hybrid powertrain obviously improves fuel economy. The all-electric Titan is also announced but no official date yet. But we hope it is soon, that way it could compete with Ford’s F-150 Lightning. The technology planned for the titan can produce up to 600 horsepower according to some rumors. Whether they are just rumors remains to be seen.
10. 2024 Ford Ranger Hybrid
We already got an all-electric F-150 Lightning, now it is time for Ford to continue the process of electrification. Next up is probably the Ranger. There is news about a 2024 Ford Ranger Hybrid in the works. Emission norms laws are becoming more strict so it is no surprise that manufacturers are racing to electrify their vehicles.
The mid-size pickup is a perfect candidate for an electric or hybrid motor since it is not too heavy and it is quite popular on the road. Ranger has a wide grille, it adds a bit of madness and aggressiveness to the truck. There are LED lights that form a C shape around the grille. The hood is also redesigned and gives out sporty vibes. The Ford Ranger is not just a simple working truck anymore. On the inside things are becoming upper class. It has suede and leather for upholstery with contrast stitching. We get a central infotainment system that can be found in most trucks. Chrome accents are present, nothing too much, just to add a dash of luxury.
The dashboard is digital which is a nice surprise. But this figures since the truck is going all-electric. It comes with standard connectivity with Apple, Android, and Bluetooth. The cargo bed is 5 feet long, and 6 feet on certain cab trims. The platform is 2 inches wider and longer than the previous ranger. This improves balance and drives along with handling. This is an improvement in both the work and life usage of the trucks.
Under the hood we get a 2.0-liter diesel I-4, we have a 3.0-liter turbodiesel V6. And a 2.3-liter turbocharged I-4. Transmission wise we have a 10-speed automatic and a 6-speed manual. Choice of reading and all-wheel drive are present. The hybrid variant is rumored to have a 2.3-liter four-cylinder engine along with a hybrid system to improve fuel efficiency.
Besides the hybrid variant, we can also expect the Ranger Raptor version to hit the road in 2023.
With ever-increasing pollution, manufacturers are trying to step away from traditional gas-guzzling trucks and introduce electric and hybrid-powered trucks. Some of them are already on the road and some are eagerly awaited. Technology is improving constantly and each year we could be getting trucks with better range and better charging options. Hopefully, this list helps you to find the best fit for you if you are looking to buy a pickup.
