Big pickups don’t get enough attention, the new 2024 RAM 2500 Power Wagon is here to change that. There has been quite a bit of rumor regarding the new Power Wagon and how it is going to arrive. The competition in the heavy-duty category isn’t too fierce. There aren’t too many good pickups. But those who are good are formidable opponents. There are going to be a lot of things that the RAM 2500 has to do in order to come out on top. We can start with redesigning the interior. The styling is a bit stale and outdated. Which means it could use a bit of makeup on the inside.
Some premium materials wouldn’t hurt either. Updating technology and safety features is always a good idea. The exterior is poised to stay the same. Mostly because it has an iconic look and is loved because of it. The powertrain however is a big question mark. There have been rumors about electrification but we don’t believe this is going to happen anytime soon. It doesn’t make sense yet for the big pickups to make this change. But let’s take a look at the whole picture of the new RAM 2500 Power Wagon.
Interior Changes
The inside of the 2024 RAM 2500 Power Wagon is getting some refreshment on the inside. There is going to be still enough space for five passengers. New cushioning to improve comfort even on the bumpiest rides. This is a workhorse so people will be sitting in it for long periods of time, therefore comfort is of utmost importance.
Safety technology is updated but we are most excited at the prospect of hands-free driving. This covers over 200 000 miles of pre-mapped interstate roads. A panoramic roof is not something we expect in a workhorse pickup.
Mild Facelift Is On the Way
The outside of the 2024 RAM 2500 Power Wagon will look the same as before. Big front with big shiny fascia. A lot of air intakes to cool the big engines down. It does have an ergonomic and aerodynamic design which improves fuel economy and handling.
It has nice ground clearance so it won’t feel out of place wherever you put it, no matter how difficult the terrain is. There are big 19-inch wheel rims available with all-terrain tires. The wheels are lightweight to shave some weight off and improve power to weight ratio.
RAM 2500 Power Wagon – What About Performance?
The new 2024 RAM 2500 Power Wagon is going to be in a good position to come out on top in its competition. This can be attributed to it having amazing powertrain options under the hood. Yes, you read that correctly, there will be more than one option and they are all-powerful. There are three engines available. A standard 6.4-liter V-8 engine with 410 horsepower and 429 pound-feet of torque powers all variants. It comes with a top-notch eight-speed automatic transmission. The Power Wagon, which only has four-wheel drive, is equipped with this engine and transmission. However, a 6.7-liter Cummins diesel inline-six that uses two options, rear- or four-wheel power is also available for every other model. There are two diesel versions available. The first option has 370 horses and 850 pound-feet of torque and is offered in both 2500 and 3500 variants.
Only available on the 3500, the 400-hp high-output model produces a mind-blowing 1075 pound-feet of torque. Both engines are mated to a six-speed automatic transmission, as opposed to the more recent 10-speed transmissions used in all of its diesel rivals. The Cummins engine weighs 490 pounds more than the V-8 at 1060 pounds, so the diesel vehicles are slower and less maneuverable in town, but they have far better towing and hauling. The Cummins has undergone remarkable improvement thanks to Ram. It’s no more a loud beast, but it is still louder than the V-8. Although these options are amazing, there are still rumors of improvement in that regard. One that comes up more and more often, is the full electrification of the 2500 Power Wagon. This is easier said than done.
Nothing compares in performance against the good old diesel engine. This is because it offers unrivaled power, torque, and fuel economy. However, there isn’t always an opportunity to make the change. This might be due to the old platform and architecture. So in order to accommodate all the electrical components there needs to be a new platform implemented. Also, the battery would need to be a big one. Preferably upwards of 150 kWh. We saw that the Cybertruck uses a battery of around 300 kWh. So the technology is there, it just needs to be installed properly. The horsepower and torque are amazing when compared to other pickups. So full electrification has a lot of benefits. Not to mention the zero carbon footprint that sparked the whole idea of green vehicles.
Towing and Hauling
The popular 2500 4×4 Crew Cab variant has a maximum payload of 2380 pounds and a maximum trailer-weight capability of 19,010 pounds when using that engine. These are impressive results for the class. The 2500 4×4 Crew Cab’s 370 horsepower Cummins engine can pull 16,870 pounds and tow 3240 pounds. The vehicle can handle 3240 pounds and tow 14,370 pounds with the regular V-8, which is more than enough for the majority of work and weekend excursions.
Fuel Economy
The upcoming 2024 RAM 2500 Power Wagon has decent mileage considering how big it is. With a combined driving regimen, 2500 can get 18 mpg. This is much better than other heavy-duty pickups. So the new RAM has an upside in that regard most definitely.
