Mercedes has introduced its all-new first-ever pickup truck. This fancy X-Class truck will definitely make a big noise at the market, so we expect some answers from the biggest competitors. Guess who is building the rival. Do you need any help? Okay, it’s a carmaker from Germany. That was not too hard to guess. Yes, there is a 2019 BMW Pickup Truck in the works.
Well, perhaps not in the works, but definitely in short-term plans. We can’t tell you the exact name of the upcoming workhorse, but we know it’s going to be based on the new generation X5. Now, BMW’s officials called Mercedes’ pickup appalling. We don’t want to take sides here. However, we can’t wait to see BMW’s first truck to compare it with the biggest rival.
2019 BMW Pickup Truck: Design and Tech
When we said for the 2019 BMW Pickup Truck that it’s going to be based on the X5, didn’t mean it’s going to look like the SUV sibling only. The pickup will borrow some of the styling cues, but that won’t be everything. The vehicle will use the same platform and some engine options form the new generation BMW X5. Plus, it’s will probably host pretty much the same equipment and technologies inside. If everything goes according to the plan, BMW’s first-ever pickup will be very luxurious, but also road-oriented only without any serious off-road capacity.
As it will look like as the crossover sibling, the 2019 BMW Pickup Truck will probably host pretty much the same front end. Some prototypes of the next generation X5 showed a significantly more dynamic exterior design with aggressive hood and more angular A-pillar. In addition, there will be a dominant grille and massive bumper, as well as pretty angular headlights with laser technology.
Platform and Engines
The pickup truck will ride on a CLAR platform. That’s short for Cluster Architecture, which means it’s going to combine lightweight materials such as aluminum and magnesium. This way, the 2019 BMW Pickup Truck should be very light and quite rigid, plus, capable to accommodate a range of different engines.
Speaking of which, we don’t expect any kind of V8 under the hood of the 2019 BMW Pickup Truck. Instead, the vehicle will rely on 4- and 6-engines, both gasoline and diesel. As for the gasoline pickup truck, it’s going to use a 2.0-liter TwinPower Turbo four-pot as a base. The mill will develop 248 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque. The more potent model will get a 3.0-liter six-cylinder turbo with 355 horsepower and 332 pound-feet of twist. The oil-burner will feature an impressive 3.0L I-6 with 310 hp and 420 lb-ft. Judging by the information we have, there will be manual gearbox available. Instead, all options will come in a pair with an eight-speed automatic transmission.
Price and Arrival
If BMW plans to beat Mercedes in this fight it needs to set the starting price of the 2019 BMW Pickup Truck below €37,294. Yes, this is the base cost of the X-Class at the moment. There is nothing official regarding the arrival, but we expect BMW’s first pickup in early 2019.
