The upcoming 2022 VW Amarok will be the next-gen model. The mid-size pickup truck will hit the dealerships later in 2021 and Volkswagen is yet to announce further details. The German manufacturer will work with Ford on future models.
Amarok is just one of the products, and it will get the same architecture that underpins Ford Ranger. Two models will be mechanically similar and both models will be sold in the United States. And while we are waiting for the official reveal, here’s everything we know at this moment.
The next-gen 2022 VW Amarok will introduce a complete redesign. It is the new chapter for this popular pickup truck so the new platform is in the works. As we said, the same architecture will underpin Ford’s mid-size Ranger model. Amarok will be dimensionally almost the same and the first design details are already available. Amarok will keep its current boxy appearance. New styling cues are looking closer to the Tiguan and T-Roc models.
Of course, some parts will be closer to the Ranger’s cues. From what we know, Amarok will get a completely new front fascia. A recognizable “Dynamic Shield” design is available once again and something similar can be found on Mitsubishi Triton. We also expect to see new exterior features and exterior paints.
As we said, Ford and Volkswagen will cooperate in the future and hopefully create some great things together. The 2022 VW Amarok will be closer to Ford Ranger mid-size pickup. Two models will ride on the same MEB platform. This architecture will debut in the ID 3 model. Ford plans to use this platform for its future hybrid and all-electric models. Volkswagen will do the same thing but most of these future models will be available in Europe.
Ford said the plan is to build over 600,000 units on this platform in the next five years. Another advantage of the MEB platform is the self-driving technology. The German manufacturer is working on the Argo AI, just one of the self-driving vehicles. However, Amarok won’t offer such a high autonomy level in the near future. However, new architecture delivers electrification and better safety.
The only huge mystery about the all-new 2022 VW Amarok is its powertrain lineup. At this moment, Amarok comes with a 2.0-liter engine that develops 160 horsepower and up to 220 lb-ft of torque. An optional 3.6-liter V6 engine with 275 horses and 260 lb-ft of twisting power is also in offer. However, some changes will happen in the near future.
The most reliable reports are predicting the same engine that powers Ford Ranger. It is a 2.7-liter V6 gasoline unit. On top of that, a 2.0-liter and 3.0-liter diesel engines should be available as well. It does make perfect sense, as the two models are riding on the same structure. However, the exact engine lineup is official yet, and we are also expecting to hear more details about Amarok’s specs.
The 2022 VW Amarok will firstly go on sale in South America and Europe. After that, Volkswagen will release a version for Africa and North America. The sales should begin later this year or in the first quarter of 2022. The price is not available yet, but Volkswagen will unveil official details soon.
