The mid-size Ford Ranger returned to the US for the 2019 model year but it wasn’t actually the all-new model rather a global Ranger-based version. It is the model that went on sale in 2011 while received facelifts in 2015 and 2018. However, it’s not a secret that Ford is working on the new generation Ranger and the arrival should be in late 2021 as the 2022 Ford Ranger.
The redesigned Ford Ranger is said to come on the upgraded T6 platform with the significant suspension upgrades. The model should also get US trucks inspired styling. There should not be significant size changes both from outside and inside the cabin.
The new-generation Ford Ranger should receive a significant power boost including new powertrain options and solutions. The next Ranger should abandon an aging 3.2-liter five-cylinder turbodiesel engine but there will be two diesel units on the offer including a new V-6 version. The reworked Ranger will also go on sale with the electrified plug-in hybrid setup. There will also be the Raptor version with the new diesel unit under the hood.
Ford will also redesign the cabin of the all-new Ranger and equip it with the new-generation technologies including infotainment system and safety features.
2022 Ford Ranger: Design
The new-generation 2022 Ford Ranger will be based on the upgraded, Australia-developed T6 platform that is also the base of the global Everest SUV. Alongside the upgraded platform, the redesigned Ranger will benefit from the substantial suspension improvements that should improve both the on- and off-road performance.
The new-generation Ranges is also said to come with slightly revised dimensions. The new model should be slightly wider with a marginally longer wheelbase. The result should be better stability and there will be additional room for a larger V-6 turbodiesel engine. The truck should also have an improved off-road clearance.
From the visual perspective, the reworked Ranger should come with the sleeker, US trucks- inspired styling. The front section of the model should adopt a wider, two-bar style grille version bracketed by the sleek C-shaped headlights. The truck will also get reworked front bumper and fog lights.
The rear should include evolutionary changes. There should be modified taillights with blockier design. There will also be a new tailgate likely with the multi-functional design.
Interior, Equipment:
The cabin of the redesigned Ford Ranger should provide a similar amount of space but there should be significant material and convenience upgrades.
The truck should benefit from higher quality materials and redesigned dash and instrument cluster. The new Ranger will implement a new-generation SYNC4 infotainment platform with the 12.8-inch vertical touchscreen and wireless Apple Car Play and Android Auto. Ford will also offer the Ranger with the full-digital 10.25-inch instrument cluster.
Ford will also make a large safety leap with the new Ranger. The truck will adopt a center airbag and new active safety systems. There will be active safety systems such as radar cruise control, autonomous emergency braking, surround-view cameras, blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert and sign speed recognition.
2022 Ford Ranger: Powertrains
The new 2022 Ford Ranger will benefit from the significant power boost and electrification. The truck will come with three powertrain options including two diesel units and a PHEV system.
The new Ranger will abandon an aging 3.2-liter 5-cylinder engine and a 2.0-liter turbodiesel 4-cylinder unit will become a default unit. The engine will produce 210 hp (157 kW) and 368 lb-ft (500 Nm). It comes paired with a 10-speed automatic transmission.
There will also be a more powerful 3.0-liter turbodiesel V-6 engine good for 250 hp (186 kW) and torque of 443 lb-ft (600 Nm). This engine should be installed in the Raptor version. The US-spec Ranger Raptor should use a 2.7-liter EcoBoost V-6 good for 325 ponies and 400 lb-ft of torque.
The new-generation Ranger should also get a plug-in hybrid powertrain option likely sometime after the initial launch. The system should include a 2.3-liter turbo-4 petrol engine mixed with a PHEV setup. The electrified powertrain should provide 362 hp (270 kW) and 501 lb-ft (680 Nm) of torque.
2022 Ford Ranger: Release, Price
The 2020 Ford Ranger should make the public debut in late 2021. The redesigned Ranger will appear in six trim options. The price range should start at about 50,000 Australian dollars.
