There are no too many hybrid trucks in the market for now. And all of them debuted in the past couple of seasons. A few more existing pickups will get a hybrid drivetrain soon, and there will be new trucks as well. Truckers were suspicious about such drivetrains. Well, these configurations are still new, but buyers will have to accept them. After hybrids, the next stage in evolution is complete electrification. Even now we have a lot of concepts with EV drivetrains, more than hybrid setups for sure.
Toyota updated the Tundra truck and replaced a V8 with a turbo-V6. A hybrid powertrain only boosts power. Ford also added one configuration for the F-150 truck. Its compact Maverick uses a hybrid engine as the base offer. Next season we’ll see Tacoma with a new powertrain. It is just a matter of time when will Jeep carry over the 4xw PHEV from Wrangler SUV to the Gladiator pickup. This truck already offers a diesel unit. Finally, the Honda Ridgeline hybrid is also an option. The pickup might also introduce the Type R package centered around the new powerplant.
This is probably the hybrid truck that draws the most attention. Toyota is a leader in this segment, but the pickup market is a totally different realm. The Japanese company decided to make Tundra more efficient by replacing an old and outdated V8. It was also a reliable and durable engine, which made things harder to pull off.
The base version of Tundra is using a 3.4-liter turbocharged V6 engine. It is called the I Force system. The I Force Max adds a hybrid support to maximize outputs. The 2024 Toyota Tundra Hybrid can tow 11,450 lbs, produces 437 hp and 583 lb-ft of torque. The price of the truck starts from $57,000. That is $6,000 above the standard vehicle in the Limited edition package.
The new configuration is also added to the Ford F-150 lineup. Engineers revisited a 3.5-liter high-output V6, best known as a powertrain of the Raptor truck. There, it could put out 450 hp and 510 lb-ft. The 2024 Ford F-150 Hybrid can do 430 horsepower and the torque reaches 570 lb-ft. So, the difference is not big between the F-150 and Tundra I Force Max. The hybrid setup is standard for the Limited grade, and optional for most others.
The truck can tow 12,700 pounds in a hybrid variant. Also, the gas mileage is boosted. If you select 2WD, the truck returns 25 mpg combined, or 23 mpg if you want 4WD. A 3.5-liter hybrid unit costs $3,300 over the base 2.7-liter turbo-four, and it is a $1,800 upgrade to the base V6 system. It is even more expensive than the V8. Heavily loaded F-150 Limited truck can costs $100k.
The 2024 Toyota Tacoma Hybrid is debuting next year. Again, that will be the I Force Max configuration, but for the midsize pickup, built around a turbo-four engine. The next-gen Tacoma is replacing old units. Now, there are three different setups for a 2.4-liter mill. In the base form, it delivers 228 hp, a mid-range offer takes it to 278 hp, and the hybrid truck produces 326 hp and 465 lb-ft of torque.
Unfortunately, extra power doesn’t increase towing capacity. The 2024 Toyota Tacoma Hybrid will be able to tow 6,000 pounds. However, this configuration will be available for the top-of-the-range TRD Pro version. The ultimate off-road trim level needs energy and torque for all the challenges it faces.
The Maverick is the first compact pickup and it is using a hybrid configuration as a standard powertrain. An alternative is a turbo-four unit with more power. Ford is focused more on the gas mileage. The truck returns 42 mpg combined. The towing capacity is not impressive. The 2024 Ford Maverick hybrid tows 2,000 pounds. A turbo-four engine can do 4,000 lbs, but needs special upgrades to reach the maximum potential.
A 2.5-liter petrol unit is the main source of power. Thank to electric motor, the configuration can generate 191 hp. A CVT is a power router for a hybrid system and it forwards power to the front axle. No AWD was offered before. Maybe the 2024 YM can change that. The price of the base Maverick is $24,000. With an impressive mileage, this truck is going to save you a lot of money.
This is a SUV-based truck with similar options like its sibling, Jeep Wrangler. The off-road vehicle became a favorite thanks to its performance and reliability. Gladiator pickup is not in the market for too long, but it is gathering the fan base. With the hybrid system, more buyers will be interested in the truck.
Currently, the vehicle offers petrol and diesel systems. The 2025 Jeep Gladiator 4xe will carry over the PHEV configuration from the Wrangler SUV. A 2.0-liter petrol engine and two electric batteries are producing 375 hp and 470 lb-ft of torque. A 4-wheel drive is standard, as well as an 8-speed transmission. If you run out of gas, electric batteries can take you to the closest station in the 21-mile area. The price might be a bit higher. The base Wrangler costs $33,000 and the 4xe adds more than $15k. Truck’s MSRP is $39,000. So, the 2025 Jeep Gladiator 4xe hybrid will probably be priced around $55,000.
There are two rumors about the Ridgeline truck we find very interesting. The truck will be all-new for the 2025 season, that is certain. It will also share the architecture with Pilot SUV. The pickup stays on the unibody platform, while most of the rivals are using the BoF concepts. That is the reason why the sales are so low.
But, the redesigned truck with a hybrid engine could shake things up. Still, Honda is not unveiling details from the engine room department. We can expect the return of a 3.0-liter V6 hybrid, used by some Acura models. Also, the new 2025 Honda Ridgeline Hybrid might be the PHEV. With more power, it will allow the company to turn it into performance vehicles and add the Type R package.
Hybrid trucks are not the best haulers and that is the main reason why they are not so popular. Plus, the price of such systems is higher compared to the regular configurations. Some companies won’t even try to build hybrid systems for this class.
Meanwhile, more companies are focused on the development of all-electric trucks. The future is in zero-emission powertrains. Of course, Tesla is the first carmaker to deliver an electric Cybertruck. Then GM follows with Hummer EUT and Silverado; Ford will start selling F-150 Lightning soon; Ram REV is introduced; and Toyota also launched the first concept of the Tacoma EV.
