A supercharged V8 engine is still a big wish of all Chevrolet fans. Under the hood of the Silverado truck, it would become a rival to the Ford Raptor R and Ram TRX. The 2025 Chevy Silverado SS would need even more than this. There should be tons of body upgrades and options that will help in handling more than 700 horsepower. The truck would be a high-end option, which also means a unique interior, state-of-the-art design, and unique features.
On the other hand, the only SuperSport vehicle today is the Blazer electric SUV. We can already write off the Camaro since the muscle car is entering its final season in production.
Still, Chevrolet is heavily criticized for handing over the market to its main rivals. Ram TRX was supposed to kill the Raptor, a truck that dominated the off-road segment for ages. Ford responded as fast as possible. The situation is very similar to the 2018 season, when all three US truckmakers launched diesel engines at the same time. We expected the Silverado truck with a performance setup. But, the GM failed.
The company has a couple of excellent solutions for the engine room. The most likely one is a supercharged V8, which had the most recent debut on the Cadillac Escalade, the luxury SUV that shares a platform with the Silverado truck. There, the engine is delivering 682 horsepower. Both Ram and Ford tuned their mules to burst over 700 ponies. GM engineers would have to squeeze a bit more juice from the large V8 mill.
Another option is a smaller, 4.2-liter supercharged block. This V8 is available for some other Cadillac vehicles with the Blackwing badge. 550 horsepower and 640 pound-feet of torque don’t sound bad at all. However, this configuration would slot the 2025 Chevy Silverado SS under Ram TRX and Ford Raptor R, but it is an upgrade compared to the existing V8s.
Having a mighty engine is just one step. Some many other modifications and tunings have to be done before the Silverado SS becomes competitive. Again, General Motors has experience in this, so we don’t doubt in the truck. It takes time, but it’s already been three years since TRX came out with the Hellcat engine.
Frankly speaking, the SS model of the truck with high power outputs is not a priority at the moment. On the other hand, launching it on the Blazer SUV gives hope that pickup truck can offer this package as well, especially with an all-electric version coming out in 2025. Blazer SS is also an EV but built on a different platform. A 0-60 acceleration time under 4 seconds is a great record and the truck should get something like that.
Silverado is still the #2 truck in the US. However, Ford is making a bigger gap at the leading position, while Ram is a threat. Last year, GM sold more half-ton trucks, but those figures combine sales of Silverado and GMC Sierra. Ram 1500 had more purchases than Silverado 1500. Chevy is back on track, but the company needs something special to keep up with the competition. The high-profile package is a good sign that General Motors is ready to respond to any challenge by the competition.
