2019 GMC Canyon – Denali, Engine, Trims, Price

All the GM’s vehicles are famous for their diversity. Almost every model is offered in various trim options and every future owner can find its perfect match. The pickup truck segment is not an exception. With their Sierra model, they have managed to cover all customers’ needs and demands.

In the last decade, the mid-size truck class shows constant growth. In order to answer this new trend, people from GM have taken the pattern used in the full-size segment and transferred it to their mid-size pickup Canyon. The new 2019 GMC Canyon is basically going to be downsized Sierra and it will also offer a variety of features and powertrain options. It will be produced from the base model, made to accomplish everyday tasks, to the Denali premium trim made for those who worship luxury.

2019 GMC Canyon – Exterior

2019 Canyon will be built on the GM’s steel, body-on-frame GMT 31XX platform. As before, it will come in three cab and bed configurations: Crew Cab with a short 5.2-foot bed or long 6.2-foot bed and Extended Cab with the long bed. The same SL, SLE, SLT, All Terrain and Denali trim levels will be offered. All trims will retain the same rugged exterior with some minor tweaks and additional new external paint borrowed from Sierra truck. The Denali model will have a recognizable honeycomb grille and more chrome details.

Trim Levels

The interior is very roomy, especially with the Crew Cab models which can accommodate five adults. The materials used inside are upscaled even with basic SL model, which is rareness in pickup truck segment. The base model has also a very respectable package of features which includes a 7-inch touchscreen with the GM’s IntelliLink infotainment system, Bluetooth connectivity, Android and Apple CarPlay. Since this is basically a working truck a locking rear differential and EZ-Lift and Lower tailgate are also standard.

Unlike base model, SLE and SLT will be available in both cab and box configuration. The 7-inch touchscreen will be replaced with the 8-inch and the climate control will be automated. SLT will also include leather upholstery and heated front seats. The safety features like ABS, ESP, Lane departure warning and Forward collision alert will be standard.

The off-road model named All Terrain will come with four-wheel drive only. It will feature an off-road suspension, hill descent control and a transfer case shield. The 2019 GMC Canyon All Terrain could also borrow some new gadgets like Electronic-locking front and rear differentials and upgraded shock absorbers which are already implemented in the new Chevy Colorado ZR2.

The premium Denali trim is what differs Canyon from the crowd. The familiar Denali front side with curtain grill will be the same as with Sierra model. Inside will be covered with leather upholstery and contrasting stitching. The front seats will be power-adjustable with implemented heaters. Aside IntelliLink system, the 8-inch touchscreen will be equipped with the latest navigation and voice command. The audio system arrives with seven Bose speakers. From the safety features, Canyon Denali will be equipped with Front and Rear Parking Sensors with Cameras, Lane Keep Assist and gadgets offered with the lower trim models.

2019 GMC Canyon – Performance

Talking about the powertrain, it is certain that the 3.6-liter V6 petrol engine will be one of the options. It is not yet clear is it going to be matched with the 8-speed automatic as before or with the new GM’s Hydra-Matic 10-speed automatic transmission. With the present model, this engine delivers 308 horsepower and 275 lb-ft of torque. With the new transmission, these figures could be improved. Some rumors are saying that the 2019 GMC Canyon could arrive with the new 2.7-liter Twin-Turbo I-4 engine. It should replace the base 2.5-liter I-4. The third option will be 2.8-liter LWN I-4 Duramax Turbo Diesel. This mill is perfect for working trucks since it delivers 369 lb-ft of torque and fuel consumption of 22/30 mpg city/highway.

2019 GMC Canyon – Release Date and Price Range

Since the 2019 GMC Canyon will be a carryover of the present model its release could be expected in the second half of 2018. The price range will stay as it is. This means that the base SL model will cost around $20,500 and SLE trim $28,200. Both, SLT and All Terrain will be priced at $34,500 while the premium Canyon Denali will cost close to $40,000.

The 2019 Canyon is still the second generation of the GM’s mid-size truck. The third generation is yet to be developed and its release will not happen before 2020. However, that new model will bring some major changes in the design and might also offer the first hybrid system in the mid-size class.

  • The Denali trim level is nothing to brag about. The EX/LX level in Japanese cars is better. For example, Blind-Spot Detection, Cross-Traffic Alert is pretty much standard for these trim levels as well as cooled seating and soft-touch surfaces. So what gives? This is why GM needed a bail-out.

What about stamped aluminum or carbon fiber? This is why GM needed a bail-out.
