The all-new Tundra truck is fresh and packed with the I Force engines. The 2025 YM is coming out without big changes. The truck might add a trim level and a few colors, reshuffle some options, or update infotainment system features. Key changes are off. For example, the 2025 Toyota Tundra diesel is not going to be available for sure. We can find rumors about the heavy-duty truck and we’ll try to find out more about this version.
The third generation of the Japanese truck came out last year and it drew a lot of attention. Sales are better, but the numbers are still far away from the American truckmakers. Ford F-150 still dominates the market, while the Chevy Silverado and Ram 1500 are catching up. Just for an example – Stellantis Group delivered nearly half a million new trucks last year, while Toyota barely broke 100k mark. But, the fan base is wide and the Tundra offers something completely different. Plus, the Japanese manufacturer included its famous reliability and resale value.
The company finally replaced an old V8. A reliable and durable 5.7-liter engine could do anything. But, it was too thirsty and emission standards required attunement. Instead of revisiting, the truckmaker decided to try something new, called I Force drivetrain. Turbocharged V6 is replacing the old unit. The I Force engine added extra power (410 hp compared to 380 hp). The 2025 Toyota Tundra also gains extra torque. The main goal if completed – the new engine is more efficient than its predecessor, returning 20 mpg combined. That is a huge boost compared to the 16 mpg coming from a V8. The new transmission is also there – a 10-speed automatic gearbox sends power to rear or all wheels.
The I Force Max is an alternative. The same 3.4-liter turbo engine is the main source of power, but this time it gets a boost from an electric motor to gain extra power and torque. The 2025 Toyota Tundra Hybrid can make 440 hp and 580 lb-ft. Towing capacity is not getting a better towing capacity – 11,450 lbs compared to 12k pounds from the standard setup. On the other hand, the gas mileage climbs up by 10 percent – the Tundra I Force Max is rated 22 mpg combined. In both cases, the rating drops significantly when you select off-road models, TRD Pro and Trailhunter.
This is an old story – the company rubbished off stories about the Tundra diesel numerous times. However, fans and experts were still hoping for the oil burner that could make the truck more competitive. The 2025 Toyota Tundra diesel is also unlikely, especially now with a cleaner hybrid setup available, and other truckmakers dropping their oil burners.
Since the Japanese company didn’t launch the new engine a few years ago with rivals adding diesel units, there is no sense to do it now. Emission standards are the main problem here, although the Tundra diesel can improve both towing capacity and mileage. The hybrid unit is doing 22 mpg, while the oil burner would be closer to 30 mpg. On the other hand, Ford already dropped F-150 diesel, and GM is in the big electrification process with an ultimate goal being zero-emission lineup.
The upcoming 2025 Tundra is not bringing huge changes compared to its predecessor. The new model will be on the market for 3 seasons, so the first facelift could be expected in 2026 or 2027. Meanwhile, the company will revisit the infotainment system and update features, as well as the safety package.
Fresh colors are also minor changes suitable for every small update. The truck comes in Ice Cap, Midnight Black, Magnetic Gray, Celestial Silver and Supersonic Red shades. Additional paints open up with higher trim levels. Lunar Rock, Solar Octane and Blueprint are available for the SR5. You can also find unique colors for other packages, such as Smoked Mesquite.
Although the company promised the Trailhunter for the 2024 season, it is not listed on the site yet. We might see it on the 2025 YM. The overlanding package is going to take a position above the TRD Pro, the iconic off-road truck with extreme capabilities. Even the TRD lineup is getting changes. Tundra is going to offer lighter 4×4 packages, such as TRD Sport or TRD Off-Road. Even the top-of-the-lineup version, TRD Pro, might be revisited, although it is packed with the best options for the toughest conditions.
The truck won’t be under the spotlight with a lack of changes. Well, the Trailhunter is a cool package, but not too many truckers will be impressed with its price (likely around $80,000). The TRD Pro is now over $72,000, which is also a big push compared to the previous edition. However, the base truck is now priced just under $40,000. Forget about times when you could purchase a half-ton truck for $30k. It is hard to find a midsize model under this mark.
