2024 GMC Canyon Release Date, Price, and Specs

We are getting another mid-size pickup, get ready for the 2024 GMC Canyon. This is another truck in the overpopulated segment of mid-size trucks. There is a good reason why this category has the most competitors in it. It carries the biggest share of the market, and every manufacturer wants a piece of that cake. Super duty trucks are quite few and we really have only 2 real small pickups. But buyers are spoiled for choice when it comes to mid-size trucks. The last time that Canyon was redesigned was back in 2015. It has been almost 7 years and we haven’t seen a new GMC flagship.

The technology and style are probably outdated and buyers are looking elsewhere. In order to keep fans happy, GMC has to rethink their design and update the current offer. So, expect to see a modern and stylish interior in the Canyon. On the outside we can expect minor tweaks that improve handling and maneuverability. Under the hood, we could see a new lineup of powertrains. Perhaps it is about time that electrification happened. This would give it the edge over its peers and future proof the truck. Let’s read in more detail what is to come with the new refresh.

GMC Canyon Interior Upgrades

On the inside, designers did a great job on the 2024 GMC Canyon. We get new upholstery with high-quality leather and some contrast stitching. We can find that exclusive leather not just on seating but on the instrument panel and doors as well. There are some chrome and wooden accents as well. These are all dependent on the trim you choose. But from this, we can deduce that the Canyon is a bit on the luxury side of trucks. There are many safety features such as lane departure alert, front collision alert, automatic brakes, and similar. We are waiting for confirmation about hands-free driving. This can help drivers relax on pre-mapped roads on the North American continent. Although there are only 200 000 miles of roads on it it is still an amazing feature.

Mild Exterior Facelift

On the outside, not much is changing. The 2024 GMC Canyon still looks aggressive and a bit more off-road. It has commendable ride height which enables you to go over some big obstacles. Good approach angle with bumpers that have a winch and hook capabilities.

The front mesh is huge because of many air intakes. This way everything under the hood is cooked properly and there are no overheating issues. The hood has some protrusions and is a bit sporty. The cargo bed has a standard length of 5.5 feet. We also get a sunroof and many colors to choose from.

Engine Specs

Nothing is official as of yet, all there are rumors and speculations. But so far, the new 2024 GMC Canyon should come with several engine options. These are all new and are a breath of fresh air when it comes to GMC powertrains. First up we have a 2.5-liter four-cylinder gas-guzzling engine. It produces a mere 200 horsepower and 191 pound-feet of torque. Not much, but it is more than enough to keep the truck rolling. There is a V6 option for this engine with 308 horsepower which is worth talking about. Of course, torque is increased and these engines are expected to come with automatic transmission. Whether it will be eight-speed or nine-speed remains to be seen.

There is also a 2.8-liter turbodiesel, which is our favorite of the bunch. It produces 181 horsepower and 370 pound-feet of torque. Towing is estimated at around 7700 pounds which is quite nice and hauling at 3500 pounds. The V6 option can tow up to 7000 pounds. It has front-wheel drive and if you wish an all-wheel drive. There is a question about hybrid variants and electrification. Introducing a hybrid powertrain would surely help the 2024 GMC Canyon. It could improve its horsepower and performance with towing and hauling. Also, it would spend less fuel as it would get help from electric motors. Using one electric motor is good, a double setup would be amazing. Also, they can run on their own for 40 miles each so there is that.

A fully electric Canyon is not in the works at the moment. But GMC themselves has said that there are plans for a fully electric fleet of trucks. So, we are wondering when those plans will turn into reality. This truck doesn’t need the biggest battery ever. A battery pack of 150 kWh would suffice. This would give it a lot of horsepower and give it a range above 300 miles which would be a bare minimum. No one likes stopping for charging too often. Talking about charging we need fast charging and peer-to-peer charging features. That way you can borrow electricity from a fellow truck driver. These would be good for the environment and the wallet of the driver.

New GMC Canyon AT4X

Canyon Pickup Delivers Around 23 MPG Combined

Currently, the 2024 GMC Canyon is not the thirstiest truck on the market. But it does like to take a sip from the gas tank. It gets 20 mpg in the city and 30 mpg on the highway. We get 23 mpg combined mileage. A hybrid variant or electrification would improve those numbers greatly. So, it would make sense that GMC pulls the trigger on the electric variants and goes for it.

2024 GMC Canyon Price and Release Date

Expect to see this truck roll off the production track during the summer of 2023. There are several trims and they dictate the price. These are all estimated and subject to change. But based on previous versions we can ballpark it. Elevation trim of the 2024 GMC Canyon would be around $41000, AT4 around $44,000, and Denali should cost you $46000. We also have more exclusive trims, AT4X at $58000 and AT4X edition 1 at $64,000.
