2021 Isuzu D-Max: Design, Specs, Release

The all-new, third-generation Isuzu D-Max debuted in Thailand on 11 October 2019 but it will go on sale as the 2021 model in some markets. The new-generation 2021 Isuzu D-Max shares the chassis and mechanics with the new-generation Mazda BT-50. Two models are more modern and better equipped than ever and more suitable to compete against the class-leading models such as the Ford Ranger, Toyota Hilux, Mitsubishi Triton, Nissan Navara, etc.

The redesigned Isuzu D-Max goes on sale with an almost completely new and lighter chassis and with all-new body panels. The power provides an upgraded 3.0-liter turbodiesel engine while some markets will also get a 1.9-liter turbodiesel.  

The new-generation Isuzu D-Max gained also the latest tech and safety equipment and its cabin is also more sophisticated than ever.

The upcoming model will again be available in many configurations and trim options.

2021 Isuzu D-Max: Design

The new-generation 2021 Isuzu D-Max is based on the reworked Isuzu Dynamic Drive Platform. The new underpinning is 80 kg is lighter than before thanks to the use of high-tensile steel and aluminum alloy. The new chassis is also about 20 percent more rigid than the previous design. The model comes also with reconfigured suspension and upgraded all-wheel-drive system which will provide improved ride quality and off-road capability.

Dimensionally, the new Isuzu D-Max measures 205.9 inches in the Single Cab configuration. The Double Cab is up to 208.1 inches long while the wheelbase measures 123.0 inches. The new Isuzu D-Max has a slightly longer and deeper cargo bed but it still remains one of the smallest in the class.

From the visual perspective, the new Isuzu D-max is more modern and robust than before. The model has all panels redesigned. The front section sports the brand’s imposing grille flanked by the new headlights with attractive U-shape LED elements. The model has also prominent creases on the hood and side panels.

The rear has conventional tailgate mixed with the nice, two-stage design taillights.

Interior:

The new-generation Isuzu D-max benefits also from the much-improved in-cab design and added new tech and safety systems.

The new Isuzu D-Max comes with the redesigned dash with the hexagonal center stack with a large touchscreen. 

The model goes also on sale with improved noise reduction and more comfortable seats.

The materials quality is also better and there will be various patterns with attractive trim inserts on offer.

Equipment:

At the equipment level, the 2021 Isuzu D-Max comes with more standard equipment and new tech and safety systems. The upper grades get a new level of sophistication and comfort.

The model gets enhancements such as the new infotainment system with a large 9-inch touchscreen and wireless Apple Car Play and Android Auto. The new Isuzu D-Max includes also voice recognition, wireless charging, dual-zone climate control, rear air vents, adjustable steering wheel, parking sensors, keyless entry and more. The top-grade versions get also perforated leather upholstery, eight speakers, etc.

The redesigned Isuzu D-Max goes also on sale with modern safety systems such as blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, parking sensors, brake assist, etc. The model should also gain automatic emergency braking for some markets.

2021 Isuzu D-Max: Performance

The all-new 2021 Isuzu D-Max should provide better on-road ride quality and improved off-road capability thanks to the chassis, suspension and powertrain upgrades.

The model has the reconfigured underpinning with a leaf spring setup at the rear. The new D-Max gained also an electromagnetic rear differential lock for better off-roading. The new drive system can also switch between the 2WD and 4WD while on the fly. The model has also an improved folding depth which is now 800 mm.

Under the hood is an upgraded 3.0-liter four-cylinder turbodiesel engine. The new version is good for 140 kW and 450 Nm of torque (188hp/332 lb-ft). Buyers will choose between the 6-speed manual and 6-speed automatic transmission.

Some markets will also offer a 1.9-liter turbodiesel engine good for 148 hp and 350 Nm of torque.

The new D-Max retains the 3.5-ton towing and 1-ton payload capacity.

2021 Isuzu D-Max: Release, Price

The new-generation 2021 Isuzu D-Max will go on sale this fall in some markets like Australia. Given the extra standard equipment and sophistication, the price will increase slightly across the range.
