Although the full-size trucks continue to be the dominating force in the pickup truck industry the mid-size models are again in the focus of the buyers. The segment has shown constant growth in the last years and that trend should continue to the coming years as the recent researches of the market suggest. That is the reason why Ford returned the mid-size Ranger to the US after almost a decade of absence.
The mid-sized Ford truck debuted with the single engine option in the US but can be had in a variety of trim options and with standard active safety tech. The model is also available in two cab configurations and with two cargo bed options.
As for the next 2020 Ford Ranger version, there are no evidence yet that Blue Oval is prepping big upgrades. The Ranger Raptor version should arrive in the US with the arrival of next-generation Ranger and it’s not clear yet would diesel-powered Ranger appear for the 2020 model year. What is sure Ford will offer more options for the new model year version including additional package options and new trim likely. There will also be some changes in the equipment organization and more features should be available in lower grades.
The 2020 Ford Ranger won’t change the way it looks. The US-spec Ranger is based on the global version and two models share the same platform and styling language.
The Ranger will have familiar front fascia with the styling elements similar to what we can see on the Ford Edge crossover SUV. The six-sided grille and modern headlights will define the front-end style of the model while the sculpted hood and swollen fender flares will also add to its personality. The tailgate with the Rangers signature will also signal the model’s identity.
Depending on the trim version and package option, the Ranger will also get a unique grille finish, wheel design, and bumpers. The model will switch between black, gray or chrome grille finish and change between chrome or contrasting color bumpers. The style and size of wheels will also depend on the version and chosen package and new options will also appear.
The model’s interior won’t also bring any significant change for the new model year. The Ranger has a highly functional but not very expressive cabin. Still, everything is well organized and buyers can get most of the modern tech and comfort features.
The base Ranger will start with the cloth upholstery while offering also four speakers, small center screen, USB port, but automatic emergency braking and a rearview camera as well. Skip the base version and more worthy feature will be available. The model will add automatic high beams, parking sensors, lane keep assist, blind spot monitoring but also Wi-Fi, keyless entry, more speakers, locking tailgate, an 8-inch touchscreen-based infotainment system and more.
More premium features will appear in the top grades such as heated seats, leather upholstery, adaptive cruise control, etc. Buyers will also be able to improve the model’s off-road capability with the FX4 package or add Trailer Tow Package.
Ford Ranger debuted with the single powertrain and the next version should stay with the same engine only as the things now stand. The diesel engine was mentioned earlier to appear in time for the 2020 Ford Ranger version but there is no proof yet abut its arrival.
Ford offers two new diesel units with the refreshed global Ranger version. A 2.0-liter four-cylinder single-turbo unit provides 130 hp for the global Ranger while with bi-turbo configuration improves to 210 hp. However, if Ford decides to market this engine in the US, it should be tuned to meet US-specific emission regulations.
Ford’s 2.3-liter four-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine will return providing sufficient performance for the mid-size truck. The engine paired with the 10-speed automatic transmission will make 270 hp and torque of 310 pound-feet. There will be two- and four-wheel drive options.
The FX4 package will add electronically locking rear axle, upgraded suspension, skid plates, all-terrain tires, tow hooks, a terrain management system and more to provide the all-terrain capability.
The 2020 Ford Ranger should again start in mid-$20,000s. The arrival of the model is expected late in the year. The Ranger Raptor version is still a few years from the launch as the latest reports indicate.
